RACHEL DHAWAN
I knew at a young age that I wanted to create art for a living, and began hawking my enormous homemade earrings at the ripe age of 8.
During my teens I questioned whether being an artist was a worthy endeavour and set my sights on helping people through social work and social justice activism. When, at 18, burn-out landed me in a hospital bed with a chronic illness diagnosis, I knew there was no time to waste - it was time to start following my dreams.
I have a BFA in Fine Arts from Concordia University. My multi-disciplinary background includes painting, fibres, metal work, printmaking and video.
Flowers are the great love of my life, and the garden at Silverwood is my most cherished creative endeavour. You can find my Twenty Seconds of Serenity nature videos on instagram at @twentysecondsofserenity

As a child I used to nail together scrap pieces of wood to make boats, and ramps that I would ride my bike up and down. I would dismantle old appliances and gadgets with screwdrivers to discover what could be found within (magnets were always a top find). My explorations taught me that small details, when summed up, make a big difference.
I am inspired by the natural world, especially plants.
My work is driven by respect for them and a desire to build useful objects that will last multiple lifetimes.
I have a BFA in Fine Arts from Concordia University as well as a DEP in Cabinetmaking from the Rosemont Technology Centre. Professionally, I have been making things out of wood since 2007.
